What does long wave (LW) wavebands and short wave(SW) wave bands mean in telecommunication

Also, why does AM use LW and SW waveband while FM transmission use Very High Frequency (VHF) waveband for transmission as carrier waves?

Communication in LW and MW is communication in surface wave radio communication
LW( frequency range from 30khz----3000khz)
MW( frequency range from 300khz --- 3Mhz)

the AM transmission in LW and MW is appropriate because
1.transmission in technically less complex
2.Covers larger area
3. relatively cheaper

the communciation in high frequency carrierwave allows greater bandwidth

hope this helped
