i want to know how potential energy is generated between atoms in a solid.
and please elaborate the definition "potential energy is due to the shape or size of the body"

Potential energy is actually the energy stored in the body due to its position or state. Say, for example, when a body moves upwards covering 300m it possesses gpe = mgh

And in gases it is actually the intermolecualr forces that matter the most ...

When in free state, say when water changes to vapours, the potential energy increases and when ice forms potential energy decreases. In free state or no intermolecular forces, potential erengy is zero or maximum but when intermolecular forces exist b/w real gases, potential energy decreases or becomes less negative
