Let's us discuss what is observed when Period three elements react eith Oxygen and Chlorine
Please post accurate information and donot post any useless coments...

observation: burns with brillent yellow flame and white solid formed.

....with chlorine
observation: burns with yellow flame and white solid formed.

Like wise post as for other elemsnts please lets help each other ..... :good:

MAGNESIUM
with OXYGEN
burns with a dazzling white flame to give white solid magnesium oxide
with chlorine
burns with intense white flame to give white solid magnesium chloride

ALUMINUM...
with chlorine
PASS chlorine gas over heated aluminium.....to give yeLLow SOLID ALCL3......greenish-yellow color of chlorine disappears
WITH oxygen
Reaction only occurs if aluminum is powdered ...else aluminium oxide coating tends to inhibit the reaction

with CHLORINE
reaction requires passing chlorine gas over heating silicon powder...a colorless volatile liquid is produced....greenish-yellow color of chlorine gas disappears

somebody give obs....for SILICON with oxygen
PHOSPHORUS....
with CHLORINE
burns with WHITE FLAME to give colorless fuming liquid pcl3.....if Chlorine is in excess then pcl5...a YELLOW solid is formed
with OXYGEN
White phosphorus catches fire spontaneously in air, burning with a white flame and producing clouds of white smoke - a mixture of phosphorus(III) oxide and phosphorus(V) oxide.

sULFUR
with OXYGEN
burns with a pale bLUE flame....to produce colorless so2 gas with a very bad smell

If a stream of chlorine is passed over some heated sulphur, it reacts to form an orange, evil-smelling liquid, disulphur dichloride, S2Cl2.

Reaction with water is need for magnesium and Sodium only according to the syllabus...

Reaction with sodium and water
Sodium floates on the water and fizzes about..it gets stuck at one place and gets so hot that it catches fire , burning with an orange flame. The solution of sodium hydroxide remaining has high Ph of about 12-14.

Reaction with sodium and magnesium...
the reaction of magnesium with water is very slow....hyrogen gas and Mgoh(less soluble than NAoh so ph is 9) is produced very very slowly ...however the reaction of Mg with steam is quick. Mg glows and white solid of Mgo is produced.

Silicon when reacts with water forms a thin layer of SiO2 on its surface..this is the observation i guess. as such no observation is given in the books.

Aluminium doent react with water due to presence of layer of oxide on its surface.
Silicon and phosphorous do not react either.
Chlorine reacts with water to form CHLORIC ACID (Cl-OH)
Cl2(g) + H20(l) ----> HClO(aq) + H+(aq) + Cl-(aq)

thats ok...bt i was talkin about reaction of chlorides and oxides with water.....let me chek my memory
SODIUM CHLORIDE.......straight away dissolves to give salt solution of pH 7

MAGNESIUM CHLORIDE ...Again dissolves to give solution though partial hydrolysis occurs causing the pH of soln formed to be from 6-7

Aluminum chloride

AlCl3: Reacts vigorously, heat and steamy fumes of HCL produced, colourless solution containing [Al(H2O)5(OH)]2+(aq) and Cl-aq; pH 2.

SILICON TETRACHLORIDE...Reacts violently, heat evolved, steamy fumes of HCl produced and a white precipitate of SiO2. Complete hydrolysis; pH 0-2.

PCl5: Reacts violently, heat evolved, steamy fumes of HCl, colourless solution of phosphoric acid H3PO4 formed. Complete hydrolysis; pH 0-2

The vigour of the reaction increases across the period as the number of chlorine atoms attached increases.


S2Cl2: Reacts violently, heat evolved, steamy fumes of HCl, SO2 produced. Complete hydrolysis; pH 0-2.Bad smell of SO2

REACTIONS OF PERIOD 3 OXIDES WITH WATER.....remember AL2O3 AND SiO2 are insoluble in water

Na2O(s) + H2O(l) → 2NaOH(aq) - pH 14

2MgO(s) + H2O(l) → Mg(OH)2(aq) - pH 9.....MgO is sparingly soluble

P2O5(S) + 3H2O(l) → 2H3PO4(aq)

SO3(g) + H20(l) → H2SO4(aq)

Cl2O(g) + H2O(l) → 2HClO(aq)

guyx....make sure U Know how sulfuric acid reacts with sodium chloride...bromide and iodide
REACTION WITH SODIUM CHLORIDE
Concentrated sulphuric acid reacts with solid sodium chloride to produce hydrogen chloride and sodium hydrogensulphate.STEAMY fumes of HCl is all that is observed......in this reaction sulfuric acid behaved as an ACID
