AS (Advanced Subsidiary) is the first half of an A-level, as well as being a stand-alone qualification.
In your first year, you'll be giving AS components of your required subjects while in A2, you'll be appearing for the remaining components.

AS knowledge is mandatory for A2-level!
However AS is optional and can be skipped to appear for complete A-levels directly.

Subjects that don't require any additional course in respect to another subject is given half credit.
8004 - General paper is given full credit but its worldwide recognition is really low.
Some universities don't even consider it a subject anymore!
