Greetings everyone!

How should I prepare for English As Second Language?

I think you should read a lot (mainly articles and letters)
As you know ,if you're taking CIE, the writing topics will be an article and a letter

Letters:

Letters are formal and informal, but over the past few years, examiners have been focusing on informal letters
So you should read many informal letters, learn and memorize new:

idioms (ex: over the moon), expressions (ex: to be honest), proverbs (ex: like father like son), similes (ex: as brave as a lion),
phrasal verbs (ex: give up), compound adjectives (ex: kind-hearted), a few slang (ex: dosh[meaning: many], nosh [meaning: food),
binomials (ex: safe and sound), ellipses [meaning omitting pronouns] (ex: Got a nice idea/ Am writing)

Also:
writing should be chatty, use contractions, question tags, a good start and a good ending

Articles:

Argumentative articles consist of : opinion article - advantages and disadvantages - providing solutions to a problem
Also you should focus on opinion article as they have been focused on the past few years, and read many articles,
and search for words you don't know and look them up in the dictionary to build up your vocab.

You should learn new vocab, formal words, linkers of addition and contrast, listing, linkers of opinion.

Summary:
this is a very challenging area, you should learn many synonyms as they will help you when using your own words in the summary area.

To sum up:

Learn new vocab as much as you can.
Read many informal letters and articles and practice writing them.
Solve many past papers.
Know the layouts for letters, articles, summary. (The ones needed for ESL, not any layout)
A good IGCSE book could also come in handy
