their is attraction between the nuclei and the negatively charged electrons this attraction is maximum between the nuclei and the first shell electrons this decreases as no of shells increases the attraction is blocked by the inner shell electrons and as a result this attraction decreases as no of shells increases and which increases the shielding effect by the inner electrons e.g as we moves down the group no of electrons increases causing increase in the no of shells which inturn blocks the attraction by the inner electrons between the nuclei and the outer electrons and so on as shells increases and increases the shielding effect, also the sheilding effect increases as the electrons moves far from the nuclei (shielding effect is actually the decrease in attraction between nuclei and electrons) opposite happens when radius of an atom decreases (willing you may have understood)
