to test if the differences between two means is significant!! formula will be given along with table of critical values!! if your value of t is greater than the critical value from table, the difference between two means is significant, not simply due to chance!! number of degrees of freedom= total number of samples-1. Look for critical value in table for degrees of freedom of your experiment!!
Sorry not so good english!! this is what i know!!

t-test is normally carried out when we are given two means and we have to compare those two means and when the data has normal distribution......
REMEMBER when t values are greater than the critical value , so it is not by chance it is caused by some other factor acting......( eg of other factors like if it is for plants related stuff dan other factors can be light exposure)

i think its not nanometer, it should be manometer!! it measures volume of O2 used while carrying out experiments on respiratory quotient!! please read As and A level biology book by Mary Jones, Richard Fosberry, bla bla..on page 209. The description is useful and easy to understand!! ALso memorize the value of RQ for carbohydrate, lipid and protein. The values are 1.0, 0.9 and 0.7 respectively!!
