Basically, just focus on the potential energy in Vessel X, it started off with water of mass "m" and depth "h". Now for it to fill vessel Y with the same amount of water, it has to have given half its amount. So the remaining mass and depth in vessel X is now half m (m/2) and half h (h/2). Using the equation for potential energy, it is now m/2 x g x h/2, which comes down to mgh/4, therefore the answer is B.

I did this one easily enough by imagining the pillar as somewhat elastic, if the weight W acted on its ends, where and how would the elastic pillar bend or compress? Points X and Y would have to become longer (tension) whereas Z would become smaller as it bended (compression). I've probably not put it in the best of terms, but that's how I answered the question. Try to think of how the weight would effect the points on the pillar if the pillar wasn't as rigid.

When in the question they say the 'resistors are of equal resistances' always suppose a value for the resistance on you'r own first. Doesn't matter what the value is. For example, take the resistances of all resistors here to be 2.ohm. The total resistance will become 3.ohm (u can surely work this out ur self right?)
Now find current of the whole circuit by using formula, P=I^2 xR. Substituting the values u'll get, I^2= 12/3 and then the final answer will be 2A. Now find total voltage by the formula P=VI. Substituting the values u'll get V=12/2= 6V.

Voltage in 'P' will be V=IR=2x2 =4V. So the left over voltage is 2V which will be the same in Q and R. So now FINALLY, for finding power in R, use the formula P=V^2/R. Substituting
the values u'll get P= (2)^2/2= 2W.

I have some problems..!

October-November 2011. Paper 11. Question no. 29. Question no. 30. I am not getting it at all! Can anyone please explain it?

May-June 2011 Paper11. Question no. 13. Also help me in this one. Followed by question no. 14
