Question: Was the abolition of caliphate the main reason for the failure of the Khilafat Movemment? Do you agree ? Discuss.

Answer: The Khilafat movement was started by maulana Muhammad Ali and maulana Shaukat Ali. It was aimed against the British government to save the Caliphate in turkey. The first khilafat conference was in 1919. It was the first political Movement started by the Muslims which made them politically aware and helped them to organize themselves. However this movement failed due to some reasons.

The main reason that I think for the failure of this movement was the abolition of Khilafat by Kemal ataturk. The main objective of the Muslims in this movement was to save the khilafat in turkey. The khilafat was an identity for the Muslims and held a great symbolic value for them. Kemal ataturk when came to power,he wanted to introduce western ideas in his country as he wanted turkey to be westernized so when he abolished caliphate it gavea devastating blow to the Muslims as they now thought that There was no use in continuing this movement anymore because the Turks had themselves destroyed it. Now they were too much engulfed in shock and their objective for the movement was finished so there was no use for them to make the movement go any longer and it failed.

Another reason was the calling off of satyagraha by gandhi. The movement was becoming too violent according to Gandhi. There was communal rioting everywhere between the Muslims and the Hindus. One such thing happened at chauri chauri in which an angry burnt 22 policemen. Gandhi was outraged at seeing this because he wanted a peaceful demonstration but it was getting out of hand. So hence, he decided to call it off after which the movement lost its momentum and the Muslims started blaming the Hindus for their betrayal at a critical stage. So the communal violence became more because of this and the movement failed.

Another reason for the failure of the khilafat movement was the hijrat movement. People had started blindly migrating to Afghanistan and they thought that just like Prophet Muhammad S.A.W was welcomed in Medina they would be welcomed too however they were not and the Afghanis sent them back. The people had agreed to blindly migrate to medina by selling their things and when they returned they saw that their things were in the hands of others and the people faced an enormous economic loss and the trust of the Movement's leaders was lost and the movement lost its popularity.

By concluding these points it can be said that the Abolition of Caliphate by kemalataturk was the major factor for the failure of the movement. Since it was the main objective on which the movement was launched so when it was itself finished the Muslims were quite shocked and the movement resulted in a failure.
